Must See

FILM REVIEWS - PAPA PLEASE PREACH

If Rajkumar Hirani's films were people, they'd be my favorite school teacher. Not the Einstein-haired caricatures from 3 Idiots, but that frumpy old professor that walks normal, dresses quirky, and tells stories with a questionable singsong voice. He is a tad melodramatic, sometimes uses sign language to drill in the message, but everyone understands him. He wipes out the blackboard, throws away the textbook and tells us to observe a baby instead.
Instantly, our faces light up.What an unconventional teacher! Is this even allowed? What will the principal say? Hell, will our parents approve?
But maybe he's onto something. More so, if this baby is Aamir Khan.
When on song, this Khan shares his enthusiasm for innovation. Naked, wide-eyed, flappyeared and stumped about why we're so worried about higher authorities. About rules and superstitions, like why the boy must always be taller than the girl.
Suppose this baby grows in minutes, and somehow begins to speak our language--keep the necessary suspension of disbelief required for us to be in the teacher's funny class. Baby will ask us why we spend two minutes reciting morning prayers. Or why we consume half a spoon of curd for good luck before exams. Do we always pass? We ask him if he is drunk (“Peekay aaya?“) to question our parents' beliefs. But he asks us more questions. He shows us a shiny mirror that arrests our attention; it shows us exotic places like Bruges, Rajasthan and spunky girls (Anushka) who believe him. To prove his point, this girl is taller than him. He doesn't mind. This mirror also shows us our reflection. We don't like what we see.
We tell our elders about this magical classroom, these odd questions.
Their only question: What colour was this baby?
Put a face to this question and you'd get revered God-man Tapasvi (Saurabh Shukla), or for that matter, majority of the free world. They speak sense, but so does PK Baby. He speaks uncommon sense.
I've been schooled about humanity in hospitals, about `Gandhigiri' on Mumbai streets, and about the futility of Indian education systems. I've not always agreed with the manner of these lessons. But I've let news channels with images of death and destruction teach me about religion. I've struggled to put down my opinions on paper, without using this r-word, `blind' and `God' together.
Today, I see my garbled, reluctant voice on screen in the form of perhaps the finest, and most balanced mainstream film in years.
More importantly, as serious as my views have been, I've never figured out how to laugh about them, while thinking, agreeing, cringing and nodding nervously. The two smartest screenwriters of our generation, Mr. Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, have gone one better and crafted not so much as a movie as a relevant argument-with the usual ebbs and flows, dramatic flourishes, pauses and lapses in concentration (bloated second half) that characterise fierce debates. I can't describe their baby without giving away too much. But rarely have I seen such a purposeful script, each scene merging into another rabble-rousing satirical set piece, peppered with actors at the top of their game.
I can think of nobody but Aamir Khan as PK, and nobody but Rajkumar Hirani as our teacher. Take in what they say. Enjoy the way they say it. Make this mandatory for impressionable children waiting to hope. After all, these kids will be the ones in charge if extraterrestrials ever pop in to review our planet. And for once, let them think past the stars.

Drishyam

Must Watch+

Movie:Drishyam

Director: Jeethu Joseph (Memories, Mummy and me , My Boss)
Written by: Jeethu Joseph
Starring: Mohanlal, Meena, Kalabhavan Shajon, Siddique, Asha Sharath, Ansiba
Language: Malayalam

Story: The story revolves around a farmer family headed by Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and the ordeals they go through and how they overcome under the smart leadership of  Georgekutty.

Georgekutty is an orphan, who has only passed class four but he is shown to be all in all by learning everything from watching movies (He is the local cable operator and big movie buff). It may look bit absurd but a very convincing script and great acting by Mohanlal, that makes it is very much believable, and the director is able to keep the audience seat-glued and awe stuck. I personally believe that if it were any other actor, it would not have worked. The calm, composed, natural and highly underacting (opposite of overacting!!) by Mohanlal was the biggest highlight of the movie.

Negatives: The reason for crisis may look bit artificial...... but the way they overcome that in the second half after interval is beautifully scripted and all actors delivered as per the script. First Half is a bit bore and slow and has lot of philosophy!  but it very crucial to build strong foundation of the character of Georgekutty. You won't realise that critical link until the movie is over and you come out theatre and think about it for a while. The first half wins the audience hearts for innocent Georgekutty and they stand by him in the second half! And if you sit through the interval you are sure to be seat glued in second half.

Many questions may be asked ...like how come nobody saw what Georgekutty (Mohanlal) did -what he did-in the suspense part, How was it all conducive to carry out all the actions as planned?! But no questions please- none should be asked - just watch the story beautiful unfold- like you are unlocking a puzzle- no logics please!

Not a family movie-small amount of violence. Parental guidance is highly advised!

Positives: The director is able to show the contrasting families -one in village and one in town, one poor and weak- representing the common man-and one powerful and rich-too good. The director has brought the best out of Mohanlal and Kalabhavan Shajon. Good Job Sir!

Kalabhavan Shajon is unbelievably too good to be true kind of acting!

Sarcism: The director really makes fun of the Indian education system, media, consumerist society and the police and the complete Indian system as a whole.

The movie is an open mockery of the Indian police, media and judicial system! The political gurus and so called Indian intellectual class has to think about this serious loopholes in the existing system.

The contrasting ideal citizen and corrupt policeman fight-Irony-Ideal citizen fighting for what is wrong, to hide the truth and corrupt policeman fighting for right, to get to bottom of the truth. Great. Incredible!

I think it is just more "must watch" - but you may enjoy it watching it again as the suspense is out, unless you appreciate the film at the techincal levels of camera, editing, scripting and acting!

A real Malayalam film deserves to be called a must learner's archive!

The movie is running houseful at Ragam Thrissur.
The balcony rates are Rs. 80/- + 10/- for booking between 10 am-11am

 Just go and watch!

Aamir's Satyamev Jayate ends with aplomb

From garnering overwhelming TRPs to getting prominence on social networking websites, the impact of Aamir Khan's maiden TV show " Satyamev Jayate" has been colossal. The talk show, which started with the issue of female foeticide, traversed over various burning social issues informing, educating, sensitising and touching audiences' hearts and ended its 13-week journey Sunday with the spotlight on the right to equality.

The show went on air May 6 and in episodes after episode, Aamir brought forth unknown facts related to child sex abuse, medical malpractice, manual scavenging and dowry.

He followed it up off the screen by meeting concerned leaders to ensure the problems are resolved.

The actor-filmmaker met Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to request the creation of a fast track court to decide the cases of the doctors, none of who have been penalised in the female foeticide cases.

Coincidently, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Bill, 2011, that was earlier cleared by Rajya Sabha, got the nod from lower house after the second episode of "Satyamev Jayte".

The episode highlighting malpractice among medical practitioners irked medical community. Though the medical community was miffed and asked apology from Aamir, the parliamentary standing committee invited Aamir and the "Satyamev Jayate" team to discuss the issue.

The grand finlae show highlighted the basic tenets of the constitution that promises equality for all. Ironically, the people in the country are still subjected to discriminations on the basis of caste and religion.

"When India's leaders envisaged building a new nation after independence, the constitution was the foundation stone of this endeavour. We had resolved to establish a sovereign, secular, democratic republic with justice, liberty, equality and fraternity for all. After 65 years of Independence, are we actually living up to those principles," Aamir asked.

The episode saluted the courage of The Sarvodaya Trust, which gave shelter to both Hindu and Muslim children after the 2001 devastating earthquake in Gujarat as well as Sunitha Krishnan, a social worker who looks to rehabilitate prostitutes and rape victims through her anti-trafficking organisation Prajwala

Sunitha, one of the rape victims, said that irony is that "people want to make documentaries and movies on these girls, but no one wants to own them."

The episode also appreciated the work of Naseema Hurzuk, a wheelchair bound lady who runs Helpers Of The Handicapped, an organisation helps disabled.

In last 13 weeks, the star evoked a range of emotions as he dealt with the sensitive topics, and each episode witnessed moist eyes among those in the TV audiences and many more at homes and offices across the country as people tuned in to watch the programme.

Before the show hit the screen, Aamir said in his promotional ads that he wanted to replicate the phenomena created by the epic Mahabharat and Ramayana teleserials of yore on Sunday mornings and he succeeded in doing so.

Equipped with well-researched instances and case studies, each episode forced people to think beyond boundaries. The programme was simultaneously beamed on Star Plus and Doordarshan, a first.

In terms of business too, Aamir has managed to draw big brands and loads of moolah to sponsor a reality show that puts the spotlight on the invisible people in the country. Airtel is the title sponsor, while Aquaguard Axis Bank, Berger Paints, Skoda, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson and Dixcy Textiles paying crores for the show.

The actor has said that he may come back with the second season of the show.

Veruthe Oru Bhariya::Movie::Review

Worth A Watch+

Review-"Veruthe Oru Bhariya" (Malayalam)

Movie: Veruthe Oru Bhariya
Director: Akku Akbar
Cast:Jairam,Gopika,Innocent,Neveditha,Sooraj Venjrandmoodu

The movie ends with "Veruthe alla Bhariya"

The story line is easy to guess and think.Nothing so special.

The story revolves around a family of three-Husband wife and their teenage daughter. The story is very predictive-the wife is sick (comedy) of her husband and she leaves him and her daughter behind (pain) to her father's house. The family goes through a crisis (agony) and they unite again for a common cause -their daughter.Happy ending!

Movie-Negatives:Overacting by Gopika (Bindu as wife of Sugunan)Audience can't accept Sugunan (Jairam) becoming mentally unstable. Some moments when the scriptwriter/director stretches his characters and story to extremes!Loss of focus-with director trying to make so much points in the movie-from effect of Reality shows to misuse of mobile phones and Internet by teenagers, from woman being independent and employed to men making so much efforts to make two ends meet.Lack of electricity in Kerala to basic socialist principles. From Commercialisation and globalisation to the right teaching methodology. So much so that in the first chance when I saw the movie I didn't understand and enjoy it well. But when I watched it again I felt better and enjoyed the movie.

Movie-Feel good factors:Gopika looks beautiful no I didn't mean sexy.Just because of her figure she doesn't look 33! Jairam delivers a very good performence after a really long time - I think. The song Jairam mimics different actors is really superb.Don't miss that. Nevedita (as Anjana (anju) as the teenage daughter) is also good. All supporting actors have done their part pretty well.Sooraj Venjrandmoodu ROCKS! But I felt somewhere something lacking.....might be the background score or music??!

Special:But What I really liked was Innocent (as Bindu's father). He is much more mature and simply steals the screen space even with his 7 scenes.I felt his dialogues are the essence of the movie.

Story-telling:The whole story is told in form of narration even though not narrative but through dialogues. It is bit exaggerated. In the end the director also explains why Sungunan is the way he his as in very movie the hero as to be justified for his negative shades.

Over all a good watch! Now-a-days you don't get anything better-so enjoy!

Welcome to Sajjanpur::Movie::Review

Must Watch

Movie::Review "Welcome to Sajjanpur" (Hindi)

Movie: Welcome to Sajjanpur
Director: Shyam Benegal
Cast Shreyas Talpade, Amrita Rao, Ravi Kishan, Ila Arun, Divya Dutta, Yashpal Sharma, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Ravi Jhankal
Feel good factors: Amrita Rao is beautiful and looks so natural village girl. Shreyas Talpade is very lively and lives the character. He is not the perfect Hero you will find in other movies but an average guy next door with some grey shades. The human nature of our hero is beautifully depicted and it can’t get any better. The song and music is simple and hum able and jokes and wit very natural. Ila Arun rocks!

Story telling: It starts as narration but later it is the view presented through the eyes of Madhav-the central character and in the end you realise you were actually reading a book written by Madhav. The story is made up of small plots revolving around Madhav but this never obstructs the flow of story telling. In the end you know there was no story at all, but can’t the list of things happening in one’s life form a story?

-->
Intro:A good homely food at your native place if you are staying away from home, eating in the canteens, hotels and Restaurants-all the junk food. If you have got used to the junk food it will take some time to start loving again the wonderful food your mom makes. It is natural. You live in AC and with all the top class amenities in the city and when you go home you feel irritated when the fan goes off as a part of load shedding. You take time to get accustomed to the good old surroundings that you loved and missed. But whatever it is you will love it.

The Story: It is a satire representation of India’s current state of affairs. But when you are watching it you will not even notice it is such a highly serious movie. But rather you will be laughing and enjoying the small small moments told and made so beautifully that you will never know when the time passed by. Coming back home if you recollect the movie, and think harder you will realize how high intellectual level the movie talks about. Right from illiteracy and superstition, Commercialization and SEZs, Animal right activists and widow re-marriage, to dirty politics and the tough life of a common Indian. In all a wonderful movie by Shyam Benegal and his team. I would say ‘his team’ as the casting has been near perfect. Each actor lives the character. Madhav (Shreyas Talpade) and Kamala (Amrita Rao) are front leads and they carry the big movie forward and they do it beautifully.

Movie Negatives: How hard you make how best you make, some idiot like me will surely come up with a negative and mistakes and in this movie too I found one. The seat in the train in which Kamala (Amrita Rao) travels is "Reserved for disabled". Some may also point out the watch Madhav (Shreyas Talpade) wears is always showing a time of 5:30. But I would say it is the style quotient in village to wear a watch whether working or not-it doesn't matter.

Those who have power to change things don't bother to;and those who bother don't have the power to do so .................but I think It is a very thin line that divides the two and I am walking on that.Well is pure human nature to think that "I am the best and my ideas unquestionable"...it is human EGO and sometimes it is very important for survival of the fittest and too much of it may attract trouble.Well here you decide where do I stand.I say what I feel.
