The defeat of World Champions by the Argentina is talked a lot. But is it a learning tip for Management that can be learned from this change of Argentina after the 4-0 drubbing at the World Cup under their coach and legend Diego Maradona. I am not stating that Sergio Batista - the team-mate of the above legend and current caretaker coach of Argentina is a great coach nor am I blaming Diego Maradona for the loss at the World Cup but I am making a point of "Right person at the right place" for all management gurus especially the Indian PSUs and scientific organisations which claim to be headed by great scientists.
We all know the legend Diego Maradona was how he won the 1986 World Cup for Argentina. He is one of the greatest footballers to have played on this part of the planet. But was he a good coach?! Going by his CV he had no good coaching experience and also had a black mark in his CV of being caught taking performance enhancing drugs in 1994 World Cup. Can you ask him to be a leader of team? What was his tactical knowledge of the game and how he handled Messi in the games every footballer knows. The game plan was not suitable to Messi and there Argentina failed. He asked him to play in mid-field and be the play-maker- it is illogical - he is a proven forward and use that to best result as he does for F C Barcelona week in week out. Another approach Maradona had was that of an autocrat- he was not ready to listen or accept critical feedback.
A great footballer may be a great manager and coach too but it is not the necessary and sufficient condition to be a good coach! This is were many Indian PSUs and scientific organisations fail. They keep the best scientist with great academic record to head a department and the Institute. But is it a right approach?
The following points are worth noting to be a good leader
1) The best Manager with passion and vision should lead the group by setting examples himself need not be the best technical/skilful all in all person.
2) Able to Identify the talent/skill of your team mates and provide the opportunity for them to shine in that and win with them.
3) Be a good listener and accept criticisms with dignity!
