The Jan Lokpal bill was being pushed for long time since 1970s if I am correct. At that time the politicians were bit more cultured and board-minded but it could not gain much momentum or get media coverage as with today. I am trying to figure of the logic why the whole scenario has changed in recent times that the anti-corruption drive is getting so much of media attention and momentum.
Of course the modes of communications have vastly improved and so is the general awareness of the common public and also size of and frequency of scams! This has definitely lead to a growing feeling of frustration against the corrupt system and support for anti-corruption drive-but that does not explain the media attention ?!
Of course I agree the growth of media has made them "news" crazy but they won't just highlight anything!?! There has to be a definite cause-a source of profit?!
My explanation is as follows the 125 crore people = Indian population = growing market = globalization (reason for opening the market-Today's PM was then FM when he opened the Indian Market-irony) = competition (cut throat competition) = lead to losses due to corruption for Indian Corporates and big companies when getting deals and license to business = Leading the need for transparency in all deals = Only choice Support #Anna = Media Hype = =publicity stunts= Congress Panic = Arrest of Anna (may be manipulated!) = Hot News = common Public support = More Media Hype = More public support = More media coverage and the positive vicious circle builds up to many just trying for cheap media attention and publicity stunts ( When large percentage of these so called intellectuals don't know what is Lokpal??!!) !
So the bottom line is - fundamentally no one cares for common man -no media no political party -No celebrity -go to hell with your problems-but when Corporates are hurt they drive in #Anna & #janLokpalbill .Hope this media support & corporate backing is there for long -till the bill is passed for #Anna and for strong #Lokpal (Not like the toothless Lokayukta bill) and this may be the first big step forward !
Thanks Anna ( I have lot of respect for this guy!) Thanks media! Thanks big corporates for backing the jan LokPal Bill!! This is really good for the common man and the awakening of the nation! They all were waiting for a leader and found one in Anna Hazare and I support Anna Hazare.
Anyways a strong Jan #Lokpalbill is a big step forward but it doesn't by itself guarantee a corruption free India we dream for!! It is a long way to go! First getting to present the Lokpal bill in parliament then to get it passed & then to implement it in true letter & spirits! Long way to go!!
There are some very critical issues -like scientific corruption-how will you take care of that?!
I don't think we have won yet; The dream for corruption free India is long & tough fight! The #LokpalBill doesn't guarantee anything! 'Power-hungry' politicians will not let Bill pass easily: as Anna Hazare said
Government of India made so much of hue & cry over Anna -Cant imagine how the parliament will react to the Jan LokPal Bill !?! Not a single MP will vote for that!
But it will be definitely a new chapter in Indian history of reforms! The Election reforms still needs to be carried out with the debarring of criminals contesting the elections, option for none of the above in electronic voting machine and right to recall and reject , setting the limit on election expenditure all that T.N.Seshan asked for and the times view!
Still a long way to go! Hopefully media and corporate support will be there to see through for all this !
Once again Thanks to all the supporters for this movement but I would like to acknowledge one more person here -The CAG man-Vinod Rai-Incredible!
Thanks Anna Hazare !
Before going on strike he had written a letter to PM-few lines here I quote regarding taking strong steps to weed out corruption -"Dear PM you are are now 79, at the country top most position, life gave you everything what more you want from life, have courage and take some tough steps"
This is how our honorable PM replied " I have received your letter, carrying the date 14th August, 2011 and carefully read its contents.
Your grievance that the police has given you permission to protest and go on fast at JP Park only for three days needs to be addressed by the statutory authorities who have taken that decision. My Office does not in any way get involved in the decision making process. The terms and conditions on which you are entitled to carry on with your protest are decided by the statutory authorities concerned taking into account the prevailing circumstances and other relevant factors.
I would request you to address your grievances to the statutory authorities concerned."
What more can I say-this is our democracy- something we called our biggest strength has become our biggest weakness!!
No one is there to stand for a common man - it the money and power that counts and rules.
Lest we Forget the humility of father of the nation! We have come very far!!
